Today marks my first official day at ThoughtWorks. The first three days of every ThoughtWorker are set aside for Orientation at the company headquarters in Chicago (This is at least true for North American ThoughtWorkers). On those days we learn mostly about company policies, but we also had a nice new hire lunch. About 30 or so existing ThoughtWorkers joined their 7 new colleagues for pizza and conversations. The pizza was tasty, and the conversations were excellent.
I continue to be impressed by the caliber of the folks around here. All of them are incredibly open and approachable, and I keep managing to learn new things with each new acquaintance I make. I am still both excited and humbled to be a part of this organization.
On a slightly less serious note: Chicago is REALLY cold. It was 12 degrees this morning, which makes this the coldest place I've been to date. I don't understand how people live like this. Though I will say that downtown Chicago is worlds more interesting than downtown Houston. I wish I had a little more time here to explore, perhaps I'll schedule a trip up here when it's not so bloody cold. Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can find my way as close to the top of the Aon Center (The building the ThoughtWorks HQ is located at) as possible. We're on the 25th floor, and the view is already amazing, I can't wait to see what it's like up on the 80th.
I do also plan on trying to post some pictures here when I finish my trip. I've not yet tried publishing images on this platform, but it's supposed to be fairly easy. I have heard some rumblings about the lack of persistence of images when posting to Ghost blogs hosted on Heroku, but near as I can tell those problems seem to mostly effect folks running on SqlLite Databases. I'm using PostgreSQL, which should be a good deal more persistent. I shall keep my fingers crossed when the time comes.
